While doing a bit of hiking through my woods, I came across a briar type vine with some very unusual fruit on it. Never seen it before, and have yet to find a local that has seen it either. I would appreciate it if anyone could identify it for me. I attempted to attach jpeg files but they are too large. The vine is a briar looking vine, some thorns, but not a great deal of them. Leaves look very much like a standard grape leaf. Fruit is about an inch long, oblong, reddish orange, and looks a great deal like a small plum. Hangs from a small stem directly off the main vine. Thanks...Dan...

Host the picture to a photo hosting site and it will resize it for you. You can then post it in the gallery. I would like to see this picture of the odd fruit.

Dan.
Did you ever find out what the strange fruit was? Is it possible it was a variety of passion fruit mixed in with a common brier vine? Most passion fruit do not have any thorns, this is the reason I suggested the mix. Passion fruit vines do have leaves similar to grapes but much smaller.

Yes, I finally found out what it was. It is a variety of wild cucumber. Also known as a balsum apple, devil's apple. It can actually be pickled, and then canned. First red cucumber I've seen. Not desperate enough to eat.... P.S. caught the fish on a birthday trip from my son's......
