Citrus Peel Deodorizing

You can use strong-smelling rinds to make your kitchen smell nice and citrusy. Orange and lemon rinds are great for this. You might as well if you have no other use for them.

Here's how:

If you have a garburator (is that the proper spelling?) you garb them down there after flushing it with water for a few seconds to get rid of whatever else might have been there. The rinds break up and they scent your kitchen. Of course it depends on how big your kitchen is. If it's big, the smell doesn't drift over the whole area. In any case, it gets rid of pre-existing garburator odors.

One of my friends just tosses rinds in a blender with water and out comes like a citrus paste. She puts in right on the counter. It smells nice, but citrus paste on the counter? I guess it is ok if you don't have little kids...

Does anyone else have household tips recipes?

I have one thats GREAT for winter... or really any time of the year. You take all your citrus peels, place them in a pot of water and boil em away. Your whole house will smell of citrus oils. Its also great for removing strong smellsin the air.

I keep a pot of water on my gas heater with peels in all winter, each time it kicks on... a new big burst of citrus oil into the air

I also take the peels, sqeeze them over and over... just to get all the oils released... then rub it over my skin. Esspecially dry areas. smells great and works amazing

Ah, I just finished waxing poetic on pomelo in the pomelo forum, which made me remember about pomelo rind as room fragrance. It is so thick and spongy - the scent just seems to live in the rind. It doesn't go away quickly if you have a nose for it. Take the fruit and use a large knife to make long, bold cuts into the top of the fruit - two cuts in the shape of a plus sign. Don't be shy - the rind is super thick.

Then use ALL your strength to pull two of the pieces apart. If you use enough power, the aroma in the rind just sprays out in a nice, breezy way. Continue pulling hard at all the pieces and then leave the rind on the counter to scent the room.

If you have kids, they won't be able to leave the peel alone: they'll think it's so neat and will keep trying to tear it into smaller pieces; or they will keep poking at it with their fingers!

Yay for pomelos!
