Pomelos are quite heavy and dense, if I remember right (it has been a long time since I last held a whole one - the restaurant near my house actually SERVES it! Can you believe it?! It's miraculous..). How can they actually hang off trees? I would think that they would have to grow closer to the ground like melons...Do they hang in the same way as oranges? Or are they kind of nestled up there like coconuts? Sorry if this is a silly question :D .

they hang like oranges. I know private growers let them hang or on younger trees will actually tie them up to avoid the breaking of the branch

I suppose all the citrus comes from evolution or god or both. Read the facts about Pomelo in the other thread. You will be enchanted and will rush out to buy one. Then you will discover that the supermarket probably does not have any and then you will be inspired to grow a pomelo tree! :)

Honestly though - I have never seen one in a supermarket! There are always loads of your standard citrus fruits but the more exotic ones are so much harder to find because there isn't a demand - nobody knows about them!
I tried one when I was in Spain once, and they are pretty sweet, and personally I think they had a better taste than mandarin oranges!
We can only guess what other people like though, because I bought that at a market and all the shoppers overlooked it...why?

You're totally right - they're better-tasting than mandarin oranges, though not so easy to peel! I think that the popularity of the mandarin must have something to do with the peel. It just slides off after a gentle effort. I once sat in one spot and ate nine mandarin oranges when there were some much yummier normal oranges nearby. I just couldn't be bothered with the peeling of normal oranges. I tell you - if the pomelo's peel could do that, the fruit would sell like hotcakes.

Well, we had some in the local big food chain here Cub Foods and I tried some. A frustrating item, but very tasty once you found your way to the fruit! They are huge, how wonderful if they could be crossed with a tangerine, the skin would zip off and I agree the market for them would be huge!:D
